        The Animal Transcription Factor DataBase (AnimalTFDB) is a comprehensive TF database, in which we identified and classified all the genome-wide TFs in 50 sequenced animal genomes. In additional to TFs, the AnimalTFDB also collects transcription co-factors and chromatin remodeling factors of those genomes, which are also essential in the gene transcription regulation.
         Here we defined the TFs as proteins containing a sequence-specific DNA-binding domain (DBD) and regulating target gene expression. The TF identification is based on the Hidden Markov Model (HMM) of their DNA-binding domains. Currently, the AnimalTFDB classifies all the animal TFs into 71 families and a class named "Others" according to their DBDs, which is a comprehensive list of animal TF families and unique in our database. Moreover, AnimalTFDB provides annotation information for all the TFs, transcription co-factors and chromatin remodeling factors in the database, which includes the basic information, gene structure, functional domain, PDB hit, GO annotation, protein interactions, orthologs, paralogs and cross links to other databases.
